Chapter 2- Birds

Chapter 2: Birds – Notes and Practice Set

Class 1 Spelling Bee Notes

1. What are Birds?

Have you ever looked way up high into the bright blue sky and seen something beautiful flying among the fluffy white clouds? Those are birds! Birds are absolutely amazing animals that are very different from dogs, cats, or humans. Instead of having hair or fur, birds are covered in thousands of soft, colorful feathers that keep them nice and warm when the cold wind blows. Almost all birds have two incredibly strong wings that help them fly high up in the air, and a hard little mouth called a beak or a bill, which they use to pick up yummy seeds and juicy bugs to eat. When a mother bird is ready to have her babies, she uses tiny twigs, soft leaves, and little bits of green grass to build a cozy, round bed called a nest. She safely lays her smooth, round eggs inside this nest and sits on them to keep them perfectly warm until the tiny, chirping baby birds finally hatch!

2. Birds We See Every Day

You do not have to travel far away to a deep, dark jungle to see wonderful birds. There are so many friendly birds living right in our very own neighborhoods, beautiful gardens, and big city parks! These birds are very common, which means we can see them hopping and flying around almost every single day if we just look right outside our bedroom windows. Let us practice spelling the names of these everyday feathered friends.

  • The clever Crow is a large, very shiny black bird. It is super smart and loves to make a loud “caw, caw” sound from the very top branches of the highest trees.
  • A sweet little Sparrow is a tiny, chubby brown and grey bird. Sparrows love to hop quickly around on the ground looking for small bread crumbs and they chirp happily all day with their friends.
  • A friendly Pigeon is usually grey and white, with pretty, shiny purple and green feathers glowing on its neck. They walk with a funny bobbing head and make a very soft, gentle “coo, coo” sound.
  • A mother Hen is a plump, busy bird that usually lives on a farm. She clucks around the farmyard scratching the dirt for tasty seeds, and she kindly gives us the yummy, healthy eggs we eat for our breakfast!

3. Birds Near Water

If you ever go for a lovely walk near a quiet green pond, a fast-flowing river, or a giant blue lake, you will see some very special birds that absolutely love the water! These amazing water birds have special webbed feet that look exactly like little rubber paddles to help them swim incredibly fast. They also have special waterproof feathers, so they never get too cold or wet when they dive deep underwater to catch a slippery fish.

  • A happy Duck loves to paddle and splash in the pond all day long. It has a flat, orange bill and makes a very funny, loud “Quack, Quack!” sound when it is playing.
  • The beautiful, graceful Swan is a very large, stunning white bird with a long, elegant neck. It glides so smoothly and quietly across the top of the shiny lake water.
  • A tall Crane has super long, skinny legs and a very long, sharp beak. It stands completely still in the shallow water, waiting patiently to catch a tiny little fish for its dinner.
  • A large, bossy Goose is bigger than a duck and loves to honk very loudly! Geese are famous for flying together high in the sky in a big “V” shape when they travel on long winter trips.

4. Special and Colorful Birds

Some birds in the wild are extra, extra special! They might be famous for having the most beautiful, brightly colored feathers in the whole wide world, or they might be known for being incredibly strong and having super eyesight. Let us learn about these magnificent, eye-catching birds that look like flying rainbows or brave kings of the sky!

  • The magical Peacock is known as one of the most beautiful birds on Earth! The boy peacock has a giant, gorgeous tail made of bright blue and sparkling green feathers that open up wide like a giant, colorful fan to show off.
  • A bright, clever Parrot is a wonderful tropical bird that can have incredibly bright green, red, yellow, or blue feathers. The funniest thing about a parrot is that if you teach it nicely, it can actually talk and repeat the words you say!
  • The brave, strong Eagle is a huge bird that flies higher than almost any other bird. It has amazing, super sharp eyes that can see a tiny mouse all the way down on the ground from way up high in the clouds.
  • The mysterious, wise Owl is a special bird that stays awake all night long and sleeps during the bright day. It has huge, round eyes to see in the dark and makes a soft, spooky “Hoot, Hoot” sound in the quiet forest.
